in my letter to repeal dont ask, dont tell

I am just one of a majority of Americans who recognize that on the battlefield it doesn’t matter whether a soldier is lesbian, gay, or straight. Gay men and lesbians can contribute great efforts in our beloved nation’s military. I think it is important to send out the message to all Americans who desire freedom that anyone who wants to fight for freedom should have the liberty to do so.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Of not from. “From” would merely imply American citizens are born here. “Of” implies that the essence of America conists “of” all its citizen’s contributions. I think it is brave and noble for someone to want to fight for freedom, when that same individual is not allowed the same hard-won freedoms as most Americans (as if that gay man or lesbian was not “of” this great nation, but merely “from” it).
